A Pilgrim’s Progress
New Youtube channel! It’s at https://www.youtube.com/@trailtothewesternlands Come check it out! Like and Subscribe and all that!
There’s been a lot going on since my last post in March. I did a small run of shows in Montpelier, then took it on the road to The Hollywood Fringe Festival for nine shows. It was an amazing experience!
I learned a couple of things. First, there’s just nothing like performing for a live audience in a wee little black box theater. I love it!
Second, I talked to enough other performers to realize that I do not actually want to spend my life taking the show place to place and spending money that I’ll never make up in ticket sales. It’s a problem.
Third, I realized that I could do the show, but I really struggled to be able to tell anyone what the show was about. I’d stammer something about Star Trek and sermons, and they’d go next door to see something else. I couldn’t blame them. The problem was my near inability to just speak in my own voice. The show is my stories in my words about my life, so tat just seemed ridiculous to me.
It felt like what I needed to do was focus on that. Speaking in my own voice with minimal artifice. Hence the Youtube channel.
Come check it out! I’m still getting my sea legs under me, but it feels very satisfying to me. It feels like performing for an audience, even though they’re not in front of me, and it’s enough like writing that it scratches some of that itch. I’ve just finished the first draft of a book titled “A Pilgrim’s Progress: Letters from the Trail to the Western Lands.” The basic notion of the channel is taken from that.
The concept is that the inner journey becomes an external Pilgrimage, where the obstacles the pilgrims encounter reflect the obstacles I’ve found on my own trip to learn and become what I am.
I hope you’ll come check it out!
